BBM up and running on the BlackBerry PlayBook
The number one sought-after feature since the inception of BlackBerry Bridge has finally come in the form of a BlackBerry Bridge update. Members of the CrackBerry nation are awe-struck since the unraveling of this long-awaited feature and finally it is here. A couple of reports mention compatibility with BlackBerry 6 only, but a BlackBerry OS 5.0 compatible version is likely to follow. It seems that you'll need both BlackBerry Bridge 1.0.0.83 (AT&T users can download OTA here) as well as BBM from the Beta Zone, but many users have it up and running in full force. BlackBerry Bold 9900 / 9930 hands-on!
We’re here in Orlando at RIM’s BlackBerry World developer event and have scored some more hands-on timewith the recently announced BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930… and we’re pretty impressed with what we see so far. The Bold 9900 felt light in the hand, but definitely had a premium feel thanks to its thin form factor and metal accents around the body — it’s also the thinnest BlackBerry to date. The new BlackBerry 7 operating system was very snappy and we didn’t experience any lag when bouncing around the new OS, likely thanks to the 1.2GHz processor under its hood. The keyboard reminds us a lot of the original BlackBerry Bold 9000, and the form factor is more akin to that phone than the handset it is replacing, the 9700. The industrial design of the phone is solid, but we do wish RIM would venture away from a form factor that’s feeling pretty stale. We’ll need to spend more time with BlackBerry 7, but superficially it looks nearly identical to BlackBerry 6 — which could be a positive or negative depending on your viewpoint. We’re excited to see what RIM does with the built-in NFC technology, and the faster processor should definitely open the flood gates to more robust applications in the future. Facebook coming to BlackBerry PlayBook this month, iPad users shed tear
If you’re addicted to your PlayBook and a certain social network, listen up. Research In Motion has announced a new Facebook application for its 7-inch, QNX-based tablet due out in “May.” The new app will allow users to view and add friends and photos, utilize Facebook’s chat feature, and interact with the News Feed. “There are over 30 million users of our Facebook for BlackBerry smartphones app who are staying in touch with their social network while on the go,” said Tom Goguen, RIM’s VP of Collaboration and Social Networking. “Now with Facebook for BlackBerry PlayBook we can also offer customers highly engaging social experiences optimized for the PlayBook including the ability to share FaceBook pictures and videos with friends and family on an HDTV.” RIM plans to provide a more in-depth look at the application later this week. BlackBerry PlayBook gets official video chat app from RIM
Research In Motion on Monday announced a new video chat application and service for its PlayBook tablet. The announcement, which came from the company’s BlackBerry World conference in Orlando, marks the addition of another service that likely should have been available on the device at launch last month, but may have been omitted due to the company’s rush to release the device. The video chat app itself looks like it covers most of the core video calling functionality users might desire, such as one-click calling, incoming call notifications, picture-in-picture so users can see their own feed in a small window while the other chatter’s feed displays full-screen, and the ability to swap between the PlayBook’s front-facing camera and its rear camera. - Powerful In-Call Functions – by using the picture-in-picture function users can easily preview their own video image prior to placing the call in order to see what will be displayed on the other end. They can also easily switch cameras from front to rear so their friends can see what they are seeing, and for private moments users can mute/unmute audio or make or take calls using voice only.
- Friends List – BlackBerry PlayBook Video Chat comes complete with a Friends List for maintaining your favorite contacts. A picture can easily be added to a contact to personalize the entry and a Call Log makes it simple to keep track of received and missed calls.

NFC
The BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 smartphones include built-in support for NFC (Near Field Communications), a new technology that will enable many rich and exciting experiences. Through NFC, users will be able to, for example, pair the BlackBerry Bold to an accessory or read information such as a web link from smart tags by simply tapping their BlackBerry Bold to an NFC tag (eg. Smart Poster).
Augmented Reality
The BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 smartphones feature a built-in compass (magnetometer) to support location-based services and augmented reality. APIs will allow third party developers to take advantage of the new functionality within their applications. The new smartphones will also include Wikitude, the leader in mobile augmented reality, which overlays contextual information on what the user sees through the smartphone’s camera viewfinder.
HD Video
The new BlackBerry Bold 9900 and 9930 smartphones support up to 720p HD video recording and playback. Users can easily share their videos directly from the smartphone or sync videos, as well as music and photos, to their computer using Media Sync in the BlackBerry® Desktop Software.
BlackBerry 7
The BlackBerry 7 OS is designed to power the new performance-driven BlackBerry Bold platform. The BlackBerry Browser has been significantly enhanced in BlackBerry 7. Apple location bugfix previewed in iOS 4.3.3
Last week, Apple said it would be updating iOS software (“bugs”) to only store a week’s worth of location data as well as allowing users to turn off the storing of location data. That update is coming in a few weeks according to BGR:
…we have been told it will address:
- The update will no longer back up the location database to iTunes.
- The size of the location database will be reduced.
- The location database will be deleted entirely when Location Services are turned off.
- Battery life improvements.
- iPod bug fixes.
Back up and restore your jailbroken apps with xBackup
If you’ve jailbroken your iOS device in order to enjoy wonderful apps Apple banned from the App Store, know you will lose them each time you upgrade to a newer firmware because iTunes doesn’t sync them by default. That’s why for many jailbreakers a firmware upgrade usually entails a tedious process of re-downloading and re-installing all their Cyida apps. Luckily, there’s an app for that. Called xBackup, it’s an effective way to backup and restore your jailbroken apps literally with a tap. As a result, firmware updates are a breeze with this nifty app…
First, run xBackup and tap Backup prior to updating your device to a newer iOS version. Then, connect with iTunes and perform a sync. You can now apply a new firmware because iTunes has a copy of your jailbroken apps in a backup file.
When you are done installing the latest firmware, re-jailbreak it, download xBackup via the Cydia Store, run it and tap the Restore button. That’s all there’s to it, really.
xBackup is a $1.50 download from the Cydia Store and it’s hosted in the BigBoss repository.
